Alanzo
Dev Name: Alanzo
Real Name: Alan Comley
Hometown: Austin, TX

Alanzo is one of those programmer types, ("You know, the ones who are always right") who got his start working on Ashen Empires and Dransik Classic back in July of 2007. For almost six months he's been learning the ropes around our system and is now ready to help tackle the Tides of Fate expansion.

What's your favorite game?
"Overall: Magic: The Gathering
Video Game: Super Mario 64."

What do you like to do in your spare time?
"I like to watch paint dry. Occasionally a fly will land on the wet paint and struggle for freedom only to fail. That's when things start to get exciting. If there is no wet paint around, I'll watch movies, play various sports and games, hang out with my friends, or do absolutely nothing. Think of a less-funny version of Seinfeld only with more cursing."

What moment in the game industry is most memorable to you?
"Actually getting a job, since all you hear about is how hard it is to break into the game industry."

What do you know today that you wish you knew 20 years ago? (in Alanzo's case, 10 and 5 years ago)
"20 years ago - The triangle doesn't fit in the square hole.
10 years ago - 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841
05 years ago - Google would eventually take over the world and enslave mankind."

If you could make any game, what would it be?
"I'd make a story driven action game with no dialog. Instead music would be used to express the emotion. Not sappy music either, but some badass metal."

What is the longest time you've programmed with little to no sleep?
"I might have lost a night or two sleep throwing together a project at the last minute. I'm not a coffee drinker, so sleep can only be held off for so long."

If Ashen Empires was made out of BBQ spare ribs...would ya eat it?
"Sure, but only since it doesn't have mad cow disease...or does it?"

Burning Spear
Dev Name: Burning Spear
Real Name: David Reese
Hometown: Austin, TX

Burning Spear has been in the game industry for 26 years, starting with his first job at Origin. He mostly does programming in addition to business development, architecture of the portal's back-end systems (such as the database), and a bit of design. If you've played more than 5 minutes of AE you've probably met some of his work, such as the party system, chat, and (the latest addition to AE) the map zoom feature.

What's your favorite game?
"Can't be just one -- Zork 1 & 2, Ultima 1-4, Fallout 1 & 2, Civilization 3, Master of Magic, Master of Orion 1 & 2, Warcraft 1 & 2, a ton of coin op games. Lately I've been playing Zelda on the Wii but I don't think it's a favorite."

What do you like to do in your spare time?
"Spend time with my wife and kids."

What moment in the game industry is most memorable to you?
"Being hired at Origin and being able to work with some of the legends like Richard, Warren and Chris."

What do you know today that you wish you knew 20 years ago?
"How people think."

If you could make any game, what would it be?
"I already made that game, it got killed."

What is the longest time you've programmed with little to no sleep?
"Well, probably a month or so, operating on 7 day work days with fewer than 5 hours of sleep a night."

If Ashen Empires was made out of BBQ spare ribs...would ya eat it?
"If it had Rudy's BBQ sauce on it or they were cooked at the Salt Lick!"

OneEye
Dev Name: OneEye
Real Name: Bill Money
Hometown: Austin, TX

OneEye has been working with games since he was in high school when he programmed games for the BBS. After that he started working on games for the Macintosh with long time friend Glenda Adams, now head of product development at Aspyr Media. His first "real" job in the industry was in 1993 when he came on board with Looking Glass.

What's your favorite game?
"I don't have just one, but some of my favorites are Wizardry I, Everquest, Diablo II and Deus Ex."

What do you like to do in your spare time?
"I have no spare time, but if I did I like to play golf, watch the Texas Longhorns (any sport) and drink margaritas."

What moment in the game industry is most memorable to you?
"There have been many, but probably being able to attend the 1996 baseball all-star game and getting to meet lots of legendary players when I worked on the Front Page Sports baseball game."

What do you know today that you wish you knew 20 years ago?
"Pretty much everything."

If you could make any game, what would it be?
"A prequel to Dues Ex."

What is the longest time you've programmed with little to no sleep?
"We delivered a gold master on a game while I was at Dynamix for a 9am deadline after working out the final kinks over a period of 48 hours."

If Ashen Empires was made out of BBQ spare ribs...would ya eat it?
"Of course - unless they had a honey mustard sauce."

TheTyrant
Dev Name: TheTyrant
Real Name: Shane Davis
Hometown: Olean, NY

Thetyrant has been working on video games since the summer of 2006 when he provided Iron Will Games with art for the SoC expansion along with some minor design ideas. What is unique about TheTyrant is that he started as a player of the prequel game Dransik since 2001 and landed with his first game industry job on the game he grew up playing. Currently he works as 3D Artist and Designer for Ashen Empires and Dransik.

What's your favorite game?
"Well everyone knows this is a loaded question, a real gamer can't just choose one. But I will name one worthy of mentioning. The game is old and out-dated and many won't recognize it, but my favorite RPG would be Darklands."

What do you like to do in your spare time?
"I work roughly 80hours a week, so spare time is very limited but I enjoy playing games, obviously. I also like traveling, especially vacationing in Cape Cod."

What moment in the game industry is most memorable to you?
"Going to E3 in Los Angles in 2005 and meeting OneEye and Burning Spear."

What do you know today that you wish you knew 20 years ago?
"I was 5, I wish I would've told my mother to invest in tech stock."

If you could make any game, what would it be?
"An Adventure/RPG based on the movie: Troll/Troll2."

What is the longest time you've programmed with little to no sleep?
"Well I would say I worked a 16 hour day, but that included 3d modeling, animation, coding, and some design doc write-ups."

If Ashen Empires was made out of BBQ spare ribs...would ya eat it?
"I am the Dirty Dev, of course I would eat it, I eat it all!"

Zarquon
Dev Name: Zarquon
Real Name: Doug Gesler
Hometown: Lima, Ohio

Zarquon has been in the game industry since 1996, where he got his start working on Dransik (now known as Dransik Classic). Zarquon worked on several parts of both Dransik and Ashen Empires, including the dynamic quest system (which is being worked on right now) and the magic system. His favorite part of being a developer is the satisfaction he gets from watching people enjoy his work.

What's your favorite game?
"Quake World (M.O.P. POW) and Command & Conquer"

What do you like to do in your spare time?
"Work on my car and go to the beach"

What moment in the game industry is most memorable to you?
"The cashier at Gamespot recognized my name from the work I did on Area 51."

What do you know today that you wish you knew 20 years ago?
"I wish I knew that MMOs would take off as good as they did 10 years ago."

If you could make any game, what would it be?
"An FPS with motorcycles."

What is the longest time you've programmed with little to no sleep?
"4 1/2 days."

If Ashen Empires was made out of BBQ spare ribs...would ya eat it?
"Heck yeah! I'd put some Rudy's BBQ sauce on it."
