That 'ol Retro Feeling

April 2, 2008

Tempester's latest article is a reflection on the various game design styles that can be found throughout Ashen Empires. With the upcoming graphical overaul, he encourages players to revisit old hunting grounds.

I was hunting lightning slugs far west of Chelra, on the Broken Finger, when it occurred to me. This place is a lot different. The Broken Finger area had a real old-style feeling to it. The lay out of the area, the monsters, the drops (Battle Armor of Waking, truly a modern piece of a warriors attire), just the feel of being in that area felt like you were retrogaming in a sense.

AE on Pixel Mine Portal

March 31, 2008

As of March 31, 2008, Ashen Empires and Dransik Classic will be distributed through the Pixel Mine Portal. Expect to see many familiar faces at Pixel Mine (and hopefully some new faces in the IWG community!).

What exactly is changing? Ashen Empires and Dransik Classic are still owned and maintained by Iron Will Games, however, the following areas will now be managed by Pixel Mine, Inc:

  • Launcher
  • Forums
  • Secure Site

Your account information is completely secure, existing in the same secure database. There are only two things you need to do to transition to the new system. First, download the new Pixel Mine Launcher. To preserve your user configuration files, please view this walkthrough.

Next, please reserve your forum name by editing your account information on the Pixel Mine Secure Site. The new forums are tied to your game accounts. You get one forum name and you can only set this name once. After you have done this you can log in to the forums. (To access the forums you must have an account AND a forum name).

We want to make sure that this transition goes as smoothly as possible. If you need assistance with this transition or have any questions/concerns, do not hesitate to email Pixel Mine Support. Please also read this announcement which goes into further detail about the changes.

Slash Commands and Revenge

Sunday February 17, 2008

Midnight's latest article is on the recent announcement of the /killcount feature, wrapping up with an update on the race to see which server can complete the Blue Revenge set first.

Thanks to Zarquon for working diligently on the code for us, the players, to be able to avoid the third party in finding out our kills. It's always a great feeling to see that you are making progress after the hours you have spent hunting. When it is added, the "slash command" will allow a player to type "/killcount" to display his/her kills in the chat box. As happy as the players are about this feature, Im sure the GMs are ecstatic as well as Midnight will no longer bug them to check the party's dragon kills."

Gold, Beautiful Gold

Wednesday January 30, 2008

Tempester has a new article about a December patch which increased the gold drops from monsters.

"Gold. The precious metal which we use as the lifeblood of our economy. As a crafter, and thus a seller to adventurers, I always found it interesting how easy I could make money crafting compared to hunting. I pondered about how adventurers could afford to really "adventure" between healing, stamina and repair potions, ammunition for bows, crossbows and slings, and then of course upgrading weapons and armor."

Tempester's latest article, titled "Bow and Blade" is now available via the AE Reporter section of our website.

"The Rough Cedar Bow versus the Ancient Sword of Agon.

Now, Im not commenting on should the bow have been buffed (prior to the Jan 23rd update it was not this good), or should every common build have a end-game weapon. Im not commenting on whether people should orb-reset their characters to use this weapon or if the process of obtaining this weapon is balanced with its benefits.

I am writing about the concept of the Bow (distance weapon, capable of delivering damage of varying types depending on ammunition) and the Blade (melee weapon, single-damage type weapon).

"Knowledge Management consists of compiling information about the game and keeping it up to date. Like any other MMO, Ashen Empires is constantly evolving. Volunteers for Knowledge Management are very beneficial for the community since they help to keep the entire player base aware of what these changes are. This information can be in the form of guides, articles and reports, or other media that seeks to provide up to date information to the players."

AE Update

Thursday October 25, 2007

Don't forget, the AE Halloween Event is coming up next week. We'll open the Halloween Dungeon. Once inside you'll be transformed into a random monster as you hunt through the dungeon to collect candy, which you can trade in for prizes! The special dungeon will only open twice on each server:

Tuesday the 30th
Legends: 10am-12pm CST, 3pm-5pm UTC
Heroes: 5pm-7pm CST, 10pm-12am UTC

Wednesday the 31st
Heroes: 10am-12pm CST, 3pm-5pm UTC
Legends: 5pm-7pm CST, 10pm-12am UTC
(more time conversions can be found here)

The dungeon will open in the main room of Lotor's Castle which is located south of Jeel and north of New Korelth.

We released an update today with only a hiccup from the ever troublesome H server. We're going to take it out to an abandoned field next week like the guys on Office Space. Anyways, OneEye posted his patch notes on the forums about what all is in the update, so if you haven't had the chance to read it yet you can find it here. There are still some minor glitches floating around from the update so if you happen to find one please report it to the bug tracker.

There are a few new store items in the update. As mentioned earlier this month, there are the two new mask packs (Halloween & Thanksgiving themed). You can now transform into a variety of monsters including the never before seen "pilgrim." The Halloween pack also gets you a few house items. You can find the new items and their prices in the AE Exchange Item List.

By popular demand, TheTyrant crafted a wedding themed set of armor, just in time for an in-game wedding to be held this weekend! Congratulations to the happy couple!

The H server has been experiencing some technical problems lately, as you all might have noticed. Once the server has been restored to a more stable state, we'd like to thank you all for your patience. Expect to hear more about that soon.

Over the past few months, we've been talking about lowering the subscription for Ashen Empires until it it is completely free to play. Today marks the beginning of that process! The token cost for monthly subscriptions has been changed as follows:

Subscription New Price Old Price
1 month 120 tokens 160 tokens
3 months 345 tokens 460 tokens
6 months 660 tokens 880 tokens

As always, IWG would like to thank our wonderful community for the patience and support you all have given us throughout the years.

Monday July 30, 2007

Don't forget that the Dev Question & Answer session is tomorrow, July 31. Head to Party Island (see map below) at 3:00pm CDT on the Heroes server and 3:30pm CDT on the Legends server (8-8:30pm and 8:30-9pm UTC/GMT).

Developers (dressed as Light Gods) will be answering questions fielded from players, and GMs (dressed as Dark Gods) will be filtering questions to the Developers, who will then answer using shout. Players, please do not use the shout channel tomorrow or you will be muted for a period of time.

I hope to see all of you there tomorrow!

Guild Directory

Friday July 27, 2007

I've added a Guild Directory to the website to help both new and old players keep track of the guilds in Ashen Empires. The Guild Directory is accessible from the left navigation bar under "Community" and from the Guilds page.

Guild information has been submitted on a volunteer basis by guild leaders so there may be guilds that do not yet appear in the directory. If you would like to add your guild or update your guild's information, please follow the directions on this forum post.

Players who participate in the spotlight are eligible to receive the Customer Appreciation Cloak (as pictured below). If you have participated in the Player Spotlight but have yet to receive your cloak, please PM me (GM FujiQ) on the forums and we can set up a time in game. The cloak isn't just for Player Spotlights. Other ways you can earn the cloak will be announced soon.

Stats are back!

Thursday July 19, 2007

The popular player statistics page is back! Many thanks to GM Siyone for working hard to get this page up again. You can look at the statistics for monster kills, experience, quest completion, and skills. Fishing and Mining tournament statistics are not live yet but will be available in the future.

The web page is still working through some growing pains, so you'll notice that right now stats is only linked from the index page. The rest of the pages should be fixed soon, but in the mean time bookmark the page or remember to go back to the index to find stats.
